Weaving is a traditional craft in the Cordillera Autonomous Region (CAR), including in Abra Province. In recent times, the province has been home to a small but thriving communities of weavers, artisans, story-tellers and community entrepreneurs, with the municipality of Pennarubia as the center of Itneg embroidery.

The Tingguian or Itneg indigneous group has a rich tradition of weaving and heritage embroidery which have deep spiritual roots. It is believed that the original ritual tapis (tapestry) called kinamayan was handed down by Kadaklan (Supreme Being). The first colored kinamayan was blessed by the agdidiyang (healer/intercessory) before performing the pinaing ritual whic is typically performed during planting season and at weddings.

Old woven designs were inspired by visions and blessed by a priestess (mandadawak). Itneg embroidery symbols used today have meanings connected to their land, environment, farming, and mythological beliefs.

By working directly with indigenous artisan communities, we ensure that heritage craftmanship and weaving remain true to their roots whilst offering
opportunities to expand their market reach beyond the communities.
